Our Dogs MAL-nourishment 'RAWfed since 1999'

Kunik and her eight week old pups.
Look to your left at the picture. It is Kunik and her eight week old puppies sharing a deer carcass that was given to me by my butcher. They know what to do with it, it is instinctive, they are being Mal-Nourished.
Here at Mimmenuk we have been feeding a Biological Appropriate RAW Diet since May of 1999. We have never looked back, have only seen improvements in the health and condition of our dogs and in our puppies. From the moment they are born to the time they leave we know that there is something different about them. We are breeding our 4th generation of raw fed dogs and are willing to share what we know and have learned with anyone that inquires.
The old saying of, "What goes around comes around " surely holds true to the way we feed ourselves and our woo woos. There is so much information out there about the foods we eat, what is good, what is bad, what will keep us healthy, and what will make us very sick and cause degenerative diseases. I feel that the change has come about, because we are all yearning for the Good Ol' Days. Unfortunately we cannot turn back and undo the bad, we can just try to somehow improve the here, now and the future.
How and why I traveled this journey is not a long story. Just a little reading and research had brought me to the conclusion that we are killing ourselves with over processed foods and are doing the same things to our pets. So after reading many factual reports about what goes into our pets food, I decided that they were either going to become vegetarians or were going to eat a healthy diet meant for Canines. May I say here that I am not a die hard RAWfeeder, but I do believe that everyone needs to feel comfortable with what they feed. I personally do not care what you feed your dog, but I do care how my dogs are fed, and those that leave here. Also my research benefited me and my family in that we also eat a much healthier diet.
What I am trying to accomplish with this page is not to make you feel that you MUST feed your pet this way, but that you owe it to yourself and your pet to educated yourself ,and then make decisions based on the knowledge you have acquired. To not research about the food that we or our pets consume, and not make changes after we have acquired that knowledge, makes us 'INTELLECTUALLY DISHONEST.' There are plenty of new and wonderful commercial diets out there, I just don't use them myself.
Now travel with me on my RAW FOOD journey that started at Mimmenuk in May of 1999. I had 22 dogs here at the time varying in age. I changed the diet cold turkey and threw out the rest of the kibble. Within one week I saw quite a noticeable improvement in all my dogs but especially the older dogs...they were more energetic, had clearer eyes and cleaner teeth. My friends all thought I was crazy, but that was OK, they were not the ones having to prepare meals. It was a trial and error mission and proved successful once I had a good varied supply of food. You see, variety over time equals balance just like it does with a human diet. There is NO such thing as a 100% balanced nutrient food.
I won't bore you here with a feeding schedule since we all have different ones but I will make a list of foods that I feed: Chicken carcass (whole and ground), turkey/chicken wings, necks and backs. Offal (a mixture of organ meats), pork backbones, feet that are split in half, hearts and tongues, beef heart , green beef tripe...lots of fish such as Mackerel and Herring. Also a whole variety of veggies and fruit. Supplementation is done according to each dogs requirement and should be done cautiously...too much is harmful. One thing I do supplement with daily is Seal Oil or you can use Wild Salmon Oil, kelpmeal and fresh eggs. I got myself a flock of laying hens so that we and the dogs could eat wholesome, free range, organic eggs. During hunting season we get lots of venison scraps, but we never feed the leg bones, they are burnt in the wood furnace because weight bearing bones are too hard on the dogs teeth, and they splinter. That goes for beef and pork also.
There is so much information out there about feeding this way that you need to do some research. Every Mimmenuk puppy is raised on this diet and it is my hope that the new owners will continue to feed wholesome, fresh, raw foods to lead their new soul mate onto a road to a good quality life. However I will also recommend a good quality grain free kibble, if one decides not to go the raw route. Taste Of the Wild is a kibble that comes with several protein sources and as a general rule, if you are feeding kibble, you should vary the protein source. I do not think that any of us would want to eat chicken based Family Chow, three times a day ,all our lives. We do not only need quality protein, but we also need variety. Just always remember that dog have tastebuds just like you and I. Our dogs are alive and need living foods rich in enzymes. Processed foods are dead and depleted of essential nutrients.
Here are the changes that I have seen: Stronger immune systems, abundance of energy, healthy coats and skin, clear eyes, white clean teeth and most of all they have not required any vet care. Yes, they see the Doc once a year, but that is only for a check-up. Easy and cleaner whelping for my bitches, strong muscular puppies at birth and the pups at 8 weeks are well muscled and have great shaped heads because the muscles in their whole body are well excercised through the way they eat their food, 'NATURALLY'.
